Posting Hiatus Coming

Hi Everybody,

I will try to get something up this weekend about tomorrow's inserts as usual, but after that you will probably not hear from me for about a week. We're going to San Francisco, yay!

For background, the hubs and I lived in SF for 7 years. Nutmeg was born there and lived there for 2 years. So when we see a work-related opportunity to go out there, we usually take the whole family to show them around and let Nutmeg hang out with the friend she spent most of her first two years with.

I hope to do a little freelance writing from the conference we're attending (the Game Developer's Conference) to defray the cost of the trip. Fortunately, with Southwest tickets at $200 each and free lodging from friends (thank you!), those expenses are not huge. Also, Epu's getting paid to be there, not burning vacay time.

This weekend I'm trying to plan a few things as we pack to make the trip more frugal. For example, we have a lot of snacks stockpiled, so I'll be making up some ziplocs of cereal, raisins, etc. to have at the ready to avoid having to buy the girls snacks when we're around town. I got them a couple videos at the library to watch on my laptop on the plane. Since we are lucky enough to have been given free lodging right downtown, we won't be renting a car.

As for meals, though? We will be doing lots of eating out. We love San Francisco restaurants and have so many that we miss dearly. So every time that I've held out from ordering takeout in recent months, I've reminded myself that that's one more meal we can afford to eat out in SF.

See you next week!

Dear Carrie,
I am recent reader of your blogs - I found you after the Chicago tribune article. I find you refreshingly honest and down to earth. I am a working mom who gets to bring my 3 1/2 year old daughter to work with me and work from home (I gave up my career as a NICU nurse and switched careers so I could do this.)I love reading you every day and am recently starting being thrifty after years of not so much!:) My point is I will miss you and look forward to your return! I find you an excellent writer (my new career is Dir. of HR for an educational development house and I well understand the freelance world!) I will continue to do all I can to support your career! Thanks for giving me something great to look forward to reading every day!

Katie,

Wow, your comment really means a lot to me. It's so nice to hear that there are people out there reading.

By the way, I don't know if you have already checked out the discussion some of us moms have been having on my other blog about work, childcare and the scarcity of opportunities to work WITH our kids in tow these days. Sounds like you have an interesting point of view on that -- it's at www.myfunnyfunnyfamily.com if u want to take a look.
